Markets open in green, Sensex surges over 300 points

Domestic stock markets on Monday opened in green with BSE Sensex gaining over 300 points to touch 36,033.20. Nifty, on the other hand, rose marginally by more than 90 points to 10,822.45. 

Meanwhile, the national currency appreciated by 33 paise to 69.39 against the US dollar in opening trade Monday, driven by strong gains in domestic equities and weakening of the greenback in overseas markets.

The rupee opened strong at 69.38 at the interbank forex market against the previous close of 69.72 per dollar amid sustained foreign fund inflows and positive opening in domestic equities, news agency PTI reported.

On Friday, the rupee had ended higher by 48 paise at 69.72 against the US dollar. 

The BSE benchmark Sensex jumped 181 points Friday while the NSE Nifty reclaimed the 10,700-mark, driven by robust buying in banking, metal and pharma stocks amid positive global cues and a strengthening rupee.
