The national health protection scheme announced in the Union Budget 2018 on Thursday will be implemented from October 2, reports said.

A Niti Ayog official said the health insurance scheme proposed in the Budget will cost Rs 10,000-12,000 crore.

The annual premium will range between Rs 1,000-1,200 per family, the official added.

The national health care policy announced in the Union Budget by finance minister aims to be the "world's largest publicly-funded healthcare programme".

The plan is expected to cover around 50 crore people.

The newly unveiled policy offers Rs 5 lakh cover per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

The finance minister had committed Rs 1,200 crore for the National Health Policy which would be used towards bringing up 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres.
