The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has decided to ground Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft by 4pm today.
The decision comes in the wake of Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday in Addis Ababa killing all 157 people on board.
SpiceJet has around 12 '737 Max 8' planes in its fleet, while Jet Airways has five.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had said late Tuesday that it had banned the aircraft from flying in light of the Ethiopian Airlines crash.
European Union and many countries across the world have already banned the use of 737 Max 8 aircraft in their respective airspace.
This was the second Boeing 737 Max 8 crash in less than five months.
On October 29 last year, a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft belonging to the Indonesian carrier Lion Air had crashed into the Java Sea about 12 minutes after taking off from Jakarta.
The Ethiopian Airlines plane, which had been en route to Nairobi, had crashed about six minutes after taking off from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
