The Sensex crossed the 38,000 mark for the first time ever on Thursday morning.

The Sensex opened at 37,994.51, hitting a high of 38,050.12 a little while later. The Sensex had come close to breaching the 38,000 mark yesterday.

The Nifty meanwhile touched a new peak of 11,495.20.

The indexes were spurred higher by strong gains in banking, oil and gas, PSU, realty, healthcare, IT, tech, metal, infrastructure, capital goods, FMCG, power and auto stocks.

Commentators attributed the run to macro-economic stability and the IMF's recent lauding of the Indian economy.

Asian shares were mixed in early trade amid rising trade tensions between the US and China.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.89 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index surged 1.83 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.27 per cent in early deals.

US stock market indices closed mostly lower yesterday as investors grappled with a fresh round of tariff clashes between the Trump administration and China.
